Man helps woman fix flat in South Elgin, then tries to kidnap her

South Elgin police are asking the public for information on a man who attempted to kidnap a woman in the parking lot of Home Depot.

The 18-year-old woman got a flat tire early Thursday morning while she was driving south on Randall Road, said police, who responded to a call about 12:30 a.m. The man approached the woman offering to help, so she pulled into the parking lot of the store at 440 Randall Road.

The man helped her change her tire and then tried to pull her out of the vehicle, police said. The woman fought him off, and he left in a vehicle heading south on Randall Road.

The woman suffered "very minor injuries," Sgt. Randy Endean said. "She's very strong," he said. "She fought back, and that was very brave. She fought back until the offender finally gave up."

Police are checking with local businesses to examine any possible video footage, he said.

The man is described to be in his late 30s, of Hispanic or Middle Eastern descent, wearing a dark hoodie and green cargo-style pants, Endean said. The vehicle is described as a Saturn or similar model, possibly gray or green. No license plate is available.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at (847) 741-2151.
