Woodland students become 'Fourth Grade Foresters'

Fourth grade students at Woodland Intermediate School in Gurnee became Fourth Grade Foresters as part of an Arbor Day event Thursday.

The objective of Fourth Grade Foresters is to revitalize the observation of Arbor Day in America's schools and to send every fourth grader home with a tree of their own to plant.

Gurnee Allstate agent Priscilla Callans donated 700 Norway spruce saplings that were given to students to plant at their homes.

"At Allstate, we really try to participate in our community events and we felt like Arbor Day would be a good time to help remind the kids that making sure the environment is renewed and refreshed with brand new trees is a great thing," Callans said.

The fourth graders also held a bake sale earlier in the year to purchase a new tree for the school grounds that will be planted during a ceremony in May.

"What they (students) learn is the value of trees, the beauty of trees. Trees are awesome," said Woodland Intermediate School fourth grade teacher Cynthia Patterson.
