Indiana man trying again to get murder conviction overturned

VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) - A northwest Indiana man is trying again to have his conviction overturned in the shooting death of his ex-girlfriend.

Twenty-three-year-old Dustin McCowan of Union Township was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 60 years in prison in the 2011 slaying of 19-year-old Amanda Bach of Portage. The Indiana Supreme Court has upheld his conviction and sentence.

The (Munster) Times (http://bit.ly/1XVXVBs ) reports McCowan has filed for post-conviction relief, claiming "ineffective assistance" of trial counsel and appellate counsel.

A response was filed Tuesday by two Porter County deputy prosecutors denying the allegations and pointing out that McCowan's conviction has been upheld.

The challenge is pending before a judge who presided over the trial in 2013.
