ADM maintenance workers reject union representation in vote

DECATUR, Ill. (AP) - Archer Daniels Midland Co. maintenance workers have rejected union representation.

The (Decatur) Herald and Review reports (http://bit.ly/1VCgygc ) workers at the BioProducts plant in Decatur voted 32-25 against joining the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union.

Rich Burcham is vice president of the union's Local 103G. He says he was surprised by the outcome but the workers may petition for representation again in a year.

ADM spokeswoman Jackie Anderson says the company believes "direct communication with our employees" is preferable to union involvement.

A similar vote in January 2015 also failed. But an administrative law judge set aside the results, concluding workers had been threatened and harassed to convince them to vote "no" on unionization.

The National Labor Relations Board ordered a new vote.
