Longtime Mount Prospect administrator leaves abruptly

Longtime Mount Prospect Assistant Village Manager David Strahl no longer works for the village, officials confirmed this week, but declined to discuss the reasons behind his abrupt departure or the terms of his separation.

"We want to thank him for his service," Mayor Arlene Juracek said. "He is no longer part of the team, and beyond that I have no comments at this time."

Village Manager Michael Cassady said Strahl's last day of active employment was April 8, and the two sides will attempt to reach agreement on amicable separation terms.

A call to Strahl seeking comment was not returned.

Strahl's departure after more than 22 years with the village marks the second time since late 2014 that a top administrator has left the village unexpectedly under unknown circumstances.

In November 2014, Cassady's predecessor, Michael Janonis, went on leave for reasons never explained by him or other village leaders. Janonis' 24-year tenure as the village's top administrator officially ended in April 2015, when he and the village board reached a separation agreement that paid him more than $200,000 in salary and other compensation.

Strahl served as acting village manager from the time Janonis took leave until the hiring of Cassady in September.

According to village trustees, Strahl's status had been discussed in closed session.

Strahl began working for Mount Prospect in 1993, having previously served as administrative coordinator in St. Charles. He was scheduled to earn $151,980 this year, according to village documents, and also had the benefit of a take-home vehicle from the village.

In October, the village board honored Strahl after the International City/County Management Association recognized him for his 30 years in city management.

"I have had the privilege of working in Mount Prospect for 22 of the 30 years that I have served in the city management profession," he said at the time. "I think Mount Prospect is blessed with dedicated elected officials and staff, who without such a strong bond, the community would not be where it is today."
