MCC offers math refresher courses

McHenry County College is offering free monthly math refresher courses this spring and summer for new and prospective MCC students.

Students can review concepts from Elementary Algebra (MAT 095) and Intermediate Algebra (MAT 099) and save a whole year and close to $1,000 in tuition and books for noncredit developmental math classes that students have to take if they do poorly on the COMPASS math placement test.

Those who have already taken algebra, but need a brush up, one four-hour seminar should help students score higher on the placement exam and get you off to a brighter start for your college education.

"Most students attending one of these sessions scored higher on their COMPASS placement test. Some were able to place two levels higher," said Bob Reass, math specialist at MCC.

The Elementary Algebra (MAT 095) upcoming review sessions are: 5 to 9 p.m. April 28 in Room A241, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 21 in Room A241, 9-1 p.m. June 11 in Room A241 and 5 to 9 p.m. July 11 in Room A242 and 9-1 p.m. Aug. 6 in Room A242.

The Intermediate Algebra (MAT 099) review sessions are: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 30 in Room A242; 5-9 p.m. May 12 in Room A241; 9 a.m.-1 p.m. June 18 in Room A242; and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. July 23 in Room A242.

Registration is not required. Participants may sign in upon arrival. Students may enter the door to the atrium in Building A.
