Baseball: Haas has a breakthrough at Valparaiso

According to a story on the Valparaiso website, a new off-season program implemented by the Crusaders baseball coaching staff has worked wonders for Hersey graduate Trevor Haas.

"Trevor has pitched well this year," said Crusaders coach Brian Schmack, a onetime standout at Rolling Meadows High School who pitched for the Detroit Tigers in 2003 and spent five seasons in the Chicago White Sox minor league system. "He was impressive throughout the preseason and hasn't slowed down."

Haas was chosen as a nominee for the Horizon League 'Pitcher of the Week' after his first career shutout at Oakland.

The right-hander required just 92 tosses and needed no help closing out an 11-0 victory over the Golden Grizzlies.

Haas scattered 5 hits (all singles) and struck out four without issuing a walk.

Oakland did not have a base runner advance past first base until the ninth inning. Haas was the only Horizon League hurler to go the distance during the week.

He is enjoying his best campaign in a Crusaders uniform. Haas owns a 2.40 ERA (fifth-lowest in the league) and opponents are batting just .240.

He struck out 31 batters against 9 walks and surrendered fewer than 1 hit per inning. Haas became a weekend starter for the first time in his Valpo career and made his first start against Dallas Baptist on March 10. He pitched 6⅓ innings, gave up 2 earned runs and struck out five.

"I was very excited," Haas said on the school's website. "I always knew I could have an impact on this team. I am just happy to be able to help these guys win.

In a recent outing, Haas faced two-time reigning Horizon League champion Wright State. He threw 8 innings, struck out five and did not allow an earned run.

He was on the hook for the loss, but a walk-off single by Josh Clark gave the Crusaders a 3-2 win.

Haas knew this success was a possibility since last semester.

"I wasn't surprised (when he got the starting Saturday job)," Haas said. "Coach Schmack liked the way I was throwing, so we extended my workouts. My arm feels great and I know I have many more innings in me."

As a junior, he pitched in 16 games, all out of the bullpen. He earned a 4.81 ERA in 24⅓ innings.

Haas' sophomore numbers were even more impressive as he threw out of the bullpen in 14 games and made 2 starts. He earned a 3.51 ERA in 33⅓ innings pitched.
