Softball: Conant, Schaumburg to be continued

Add another Mid-Suburban West 'game to be continued' to the upcoming Conant softball schedule.

One day before the Cougars (11-2, 5-0) were scheduled to resume a game with visiting Fremd (14-2, 5-0), their contest at Schaumburg on Monday was suspended after three innings.

The Cougars, 5-0 in the Mid-Suburban West, were leading the Saxons 3-1 when the lightning detector siren sounded after the bottom of the third inning.

Senior catcher Dream Aaron provided all the Cougars' runs when she clubbed a two-out line drive double to right-center field with the bases loaded in the top of the first inning.

Scoring on the play were Jill Gadomski (walk), Morgan Bihun (single to right center) and Sydney Correa (walk).

Conant pitcher Sara Neuman, who ran her record to 8-0 on Saturday when she got the win over Aldren-Hebron in the third-place game of the Woodstock tournament, struck out the side in the second inning and had 5 strikeouts in the 3 innings.

Schaumburg (11-5, 5-1) had 3 hits, two by senior pitcher Paige Alt (7-3) who walloped a homer over the right field fence with two outs in the bottom of the third inning.

Alt, who had 3 strikeouts, also doubled in the first inning with two outs.

Sophomore Caitlin Poplar accounted for the Saxons' other hit. She singled to left with one out in the second inning.

Lauren Grzelak had 1 of Conant's 5 hits when the junior leadoff batter singled to right with two outs in the second inning.

The Cougars threatened in the third inning when it had runners on second and third base following Aaron's second double of the game, a shot off the right-center field fence.

But Alt escaped with a strikeout and then she belted her homer in the bottom of the inning.

Morgan Bihun also singled for Conant, which will host Fremd today in Hoffman Estates.

The game will start in the top of the 11th inning tied at 5-5.

No date has been scheduled yet for the conclusion of Monday's game.
