Softball: Hersey's heart heals 3-game losing streak

After three tough losses in two days, Hersey's softball team showed its character on Monday in Arlington Heights.

The Huskies bounced back from a pair of 1-run losses to Mundelein on Saturday and a 7-4 loss to Mid-Suburban East leader Elk Grove on Friday with a 10-0 five-inning triumph over visiting Rolling Meadows.

Freshman Sarah Bailitz (3-4) threw a 4-hitter with 2 strikeouts as the Huskies improved to 7-8 and 4-3, good for second place in the East.

Meadows slipped to 12-7 and 3-4.

"I'm really proud of these girls' perserverance and how they worked to win," said Hersey coach Molly Freeman. "It took a lot of heart after three tough losses. The girls deserve a lot of credit for staying with it."

Jackie Bednar (3-for-3, double, 3 RBI), Kaitlyn Denten (2-for-3, 4 RBI), Jodie Hermann (2-for-3, double), Makayla Tsagalis (2-for-2, walk), Kim Labahn (2-for-3, double), Remy Gerew (double) and Sofia Cano (double) led the offense for Hersey.

Mallory King had a double and Paige Connor went 2-for-3 for Meadows.

Elk Grove 12, Wheeling 0 (6 inn.): Junior Kylie Thomsen tossed a 4-hitter with 14 strikeouts for Elk Grove (15-1, 5-1).

The visiting Grens were led on offense by Haley Itzenthaler (3-for-4, triple, 2 RBI) Sarah Pauscher (2-for-2, triple, double, 3 RBI), Mackenzie Flannery (2-for-3) and Thomsen (1-for-4, 2 RBI).

Alex Masnica also had a RBI for EG.

Leading the offense for Wheeling (0-9, 0-6) were Nikki Ferraro (2-for-3), Christie Ambrose (1-for-3) and pitcher Dakota Medrano (1-for-3).

Palatine 4, Fremd 3 (susp.): Palatine (5-9, 3-3) held a 4-3 lead on host Fremd (14-2, 5-0) when the MSL West game was suspended.

When the game resumes, the host Vikings will be batting with two outs and two runners on base in the bottom of the third inning.

Brooke Bauer had a double for the Pirates, whose pitcher Maddie Craver had 5 strikeouts.

Fremd visits Conant on Tuesday to resume last Friday's suspended game (5-5 tie after 10 innings).

Buffalo Grove 8, Prospect 6 (susp.): Play was suspended in the bottom of the fourth inning of the MSL East game in Mt. Prospect.

Prospect (2-13, 0-6) led 2-0 on a sacrifice fly by freshman Madeline Borkowski and a RBI single by Cate Meersman.

Emily Carnes's RBI single made it 2-1 in the thrid inning.

The Bison (3-10, 1-5) scored 7 runs on 5 walks, two hit batters, an error and a 2-run single by pitcher Alyssa DePhillips in the top of the fourth.

DePhillips' hit was the only Bison hit in the inning.

Prospect came back with 4 runs after two were out in the bottom of the fourth.

Hannah Brummer singled and advanced to third on a double by Lauren Caldrone. Alex Kanter lined a 2-run single to center before Alyssa Cacini belted a 2-run homer to left center.

Play will resume Thursday with Prospect batting in the bottom of the fourth with two outs and no one on base.

Barrington 10, Hoffman Estates 0: Barrington (16-4) led host Hoffman Estates 10-0 with two outs in the top of fourth when play was suspended .

The game will resume at that point Tuesday.

Leading hitters for the Fillies were Carly Kordich (3-for-3, double), Rachel Macdonald (3-for-3, 2 double, 2 RBI), Jamie Brown (2-for-3, home run, double, 3 RBI), Abbey Jacobsen (2-for-2, double, RBI) and Kendall Peterson (double, RBI).

Sophomore Caroline Hoppe (3-1) had 2 strikeouts and gave up 1 hit (Brynn Connelly) in 3 innings.

Maine West 6, Elmwood Park 0: The visiting Warriors (3-7) were leading 6-0 when the game was suspended after 3½ innings due to weather.

Gabriella Demma and Nicole Byerly (double) had 2 hits for the Warriors while Allison Pearson (double), Monica Liwag, Megan Swanson and Elena Lozano (double) each had one.

St. Viator 11, Regina 3: Grace Kaiser earned the win and had 4 RBI and 3 hits, including a 3-run homer for the visiting Lions (8-7) in the nonconfernce game.

St. Viator was led on offense by Cam VanValkenburg (2 doubles), Addy Swiderski (2 doubles) and Olivia Michalik (double).

The game ended on a ball to right field that the Lions' Rox Kowalczuk scooped up and fired the first for the out.

A moment later, the skies opened and rain prevented further play.
