Girls water polo: Outright MSL West title goes to Fremd

Fremd's girls water polo team earned an outright championship in the Mid-Suburban West by topping host Hoffman Estates 12-4 on Monday.

The Vikings (20-5, 9-1) will meet East Division champ Prospect next week in the conference title game.

Leading the way for Fremd was Emily Kini (3 goals) along with Sarah Coombes (2), Paulina Pappas (2), Becca Rutkowski (2) and Karolina Urban (2).

Francia Morales-Diaz had 2 goals for the Hawks.

Fremd coach Ray Roth likes the goal distribution he's seen from the team. There's no clear-cut top scorer on this team, but someone always manages to step forward.

"We want to have the kind of team that can be effective in a variety of ways," said Roth. "And we have the kind of players you need to have that kind of team."

Another trait with Fremd this year is defense. The Vikes are typically stingy, which Roth attributed to a real team-first approach - along with a fine goalie, Emma Jeronimus.

"We feel like we've got a pretty good defense," said Roth, "and having Emma is like the icing on that cake."

Rolling Meadows 9, Elk Grove 3: The Mustangs got 3 scores each from Sarah Luedloff and Maggie Goodwin to wrap up a second-place finish in the MSL East.

Betsy Zanocco stopped 10 shots for Rolling Meadows (19-7, 7-3).

Barrington 11, Schaumburg 4: Nicole Runtz produced a game-best 4 goals and Mia Latimer and Heidi Pallan had 2 apiece to help the Fillies secure a second-place finish in the MSL West.

Ellie Connors stopped 13 shots for Barrington (17-3, 8-2).

Hannah Pearson scored twice to lead Schaumburg (6-13, 2-8).

Conant 10, Palatine 3: Sam Wooley had a game-high 6 goals to pace the host Cougars (14-11, 6-4) in their MSL West finale.

Tess O'Brien, Mathilde Mogensen and Kristin Anderson had goals for the Pirates (11-12, 5-5).

Lea Cejvan and Aly Wooley came up with 4 steals each for Conant, and goalie Cam Rosas made 13 saves.

Prospect 6, Hersey 3: Colleen Doyle and Gracie Dix had 2 goals apiece and senior goalie Lauren Broz made 16 saves on senior night for the Knights (13-8 overall) as the MSL East champs wrapped up with a 9-1 record against divisional foes.

Madison Burkhalter had all 3 goals for Hersey (14-9, 5-5).
