Martial art students celebrate Earth Day in Elgin

Students and their families from Kyuki-Do Martial Arts of Elgin celebrated Earth Day by volunteering at Hawthorne Hill Nature Center on Saturday, April 23.

Roughly 35 volunteers spent the afternoon clearing invasion plants and removing infected ash trees. Under the direction of the center's naturalist Maura Neuffer, the group also planted its annual oak tree to commemorate their day of service.

"It's important for students to demonstrate their leadership in the community," stated Rick Steinmaier, chief instructor. " We teach leadership skills and then create opportunities for the student to put those skills to use."
