Husband, boss top supporters for columnist on Fittest Loser journey

When it comes to achieving a challenging goal, the secret to success lies within the strength of your support system.

I knew the Fittest Loser would be an extraordinary opportunity to not only focus energy upon expanding my knowledge of food and fitness, but also a way to rebuild my life.

Considering the pros and cons of this challenge, one advantage lay solidly in my corner: my husband, Michael.

Married 28 years, this man could write the spousal handbook on marital support. When I approached Michael with the Fittest Loser proposal, he warmly smiled and simply asked if I thought I could do it. With one look filled with trust, Michael was on board for whatever support he could offer.

After 30 years together, I didn't think my husband could still surprise me, but he did.

On boot camp Saturdays, Michael gets up with me at 4:45 a.m. and gives moral support for the fitness challenge ahead. It's easier to face what the Push Fitness trainers have planned, with a good luck hug from my husband in tow.

Just as important, I needed support on the business front. Outside of writing a food column for the Herald, I work full-time for an Oak Brook-based payroll company, Payville USA. My relationship with owner Jim Kapolas spans more than 20 years, and I am so grateful for his personal and professional support during my participation in the Fittest Loser challenge.

While Jim didn't flinch when I asked for three afternoons off every week, for three months, that's not the support that truly touches my heart. Every Monday morning Jim reads my articles and never fails to stop by to give me encouragement. We talk about what I've learned that week.

I know the secret to my fitness success has been the support system on the home front and at work.

Thank you Michael and Jim, from the bottom of my heart.
