The Soapbox: Honored public servants in Wheaton, Elgin, an Islamic mosque's request in Rolling Meadows, pride in Fox Lake and more.

What's the rush?

Now that warmer weather (hopefully) is here, it's time for an important reminder: An "on your left" or "on your right" is not enough warning from cyclists zipping past joggers and walkers on our suburban nature and park district pathways. What is truly necessary is slowing down. Please.

On the roads, too:

One sad sign of spring is the number of motorcycle accidents reported in our pages and on dailyherald.com. It's a signal for drivers and motorcyclists alike to resolve to stay focused, use caution and avoid following too closely. You'll be safer, and kids, dogs, bicyclists, pedestrians, wildlife and other things that come out onto the roads in the spring also will thank you.

Hometown wrestling hero:

Folks in Fox Lake are proud of Grant High School's wrestling program. Now they have another reason to be pumped - Daniel Dennis, who will compete on the U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestling team this summer in Rio de Janeiro. Grant honored the 2005 grad with a pep rally. A parade and ceremony are set for Sunday in Fox Lake. Bulldog proud.

This Rose truly is a rose:

When Don Rose retires this month, he'll end a 42-year career in Wheaton, including roughly 35 years as city manager. That longevity - particularly in challenging political times - doesn't happen often. His success and his positive impact on Wheaton reflect his leadership, skill and caring. Enjoy your retirement Don, you've earned it.

Good news for youth sports

News that the City of Elgin is prepared to move forward with plans to expand the Elgin Sports Complex should make supporters of youth softball and soccer tournaments happy. Already a prime venue, expansion that would include more fields and better parking is welcome news. Here's hoping the city moves forward without any snags.

Sleeping on start times:

Faced with mounting evidence of the harmful physical, mental and emotional effects on teens who aren't getting enough sleep and an advisory panel's recommendation to push back the start time at Barrington High School, Barrington Area Unit School District 220 officials instead decided this week to take a pass. Will they sleep on it until next year?

Crossing over:

Congrats to the patient yet enthusiastic supporters for girls and boys lacrosse in Illinois following the announcement that their teams will join the ranks of the Illinois High School Association in 2018. Moving from club status to IHSA membership isn't easy. Now schools can work on budgets and transitioning while the IHSA seeks more officials.

Missing a great story:

Frequently when we write "life stories" on people, we regret we didn't know to interview them while they were alive. So it is with Mary Jane Felt, the Inverness Realtor who was Sen. Ted Kennedy's personal secretary in the early 1960s. Our condolences to her family, but what a great treasure of stories they must have.

Vote your conscience, but explain:

Rolling Meadows aldermen are expected to vote Tuesday on the proposed move of the Islamic Society of the Northwest Suburbs from one location in the city's manufacturing district to a larger location nearby. It looks like the proposal will fail, but opposing aldermen have been strangely silent as to their reasons. We're interested to hear.

Gilliam's legacy:

He was Elgin's first black city council member, and he served for 40 years. He died in December 2014, and it's nice the city has taken steps to preserve Bob Gilliam's legacy. City hall was named in his honor, and this past week, family members came to town for dedication of a display featuring photos, plaques, personal items, memorabilia and more.
