Softball: Thomsen, Elk Grove get past Hersey

Elk Grove junior Kylie Thomsen went 2-for-3 at the plate and struck out 12 as the winning pitcher in a 7-4 Mid-Suburban East decision over visiting Hersey.

Thomsen (5-1) had a 2-run triple and teammate Sarah Pauscher an RBI single in the Grens' 4-run first inning.

The Grenadiers improved to 12-1 and 5-1 in the East while Hersey is 6-6 and 3-3.

Another multiple hitter for EG was Haley Itzenthaler (3-for-4, 2 RBI).

Katie Wingerter (2-for-4, 2 RBI) doubled for Hersey.

Maine West 9, Prospect 7: Gabrielle Deema (3-for-4) and winning pitcher Grace Feldkamp (3-for-5, double) led the offense for Maine West (3-7) in its quarterfinal game of the Rolling Meadows tournament.

Kayla Pociejewski (2-for-4) hit her second homer of the season and and had a double for West.

Nicole Byerly, Monica Liwag and Jordan Hart also 2 hits for the Warriors.

Alex Canter (3-for-4, double) and Alyssa Cacini (3-for-4, 2 doubles, 4 RBI) and Lauren Caldrone (2-for-4, tripled) led Prospect (2-10).

"No matter how we do, I am always proud of my team," said Prospect coach Jim Adair. "My kids work extremely hard to better themselves, but tonight was very special, especially when you consider how poorly we played last night (in a 16-6 loss to Rolling Meadows)."

Adair likes his team's attitude.

"We've struggled this year and one of our mantras is that 'we will never quit' " he said. "The girls battled all night long and we were in a position to win the game. We have to just keep learning and getting better. For sure, the girls were disappointed but we were hitting the ball and that's a good sign."

Rolling Meadows 14, Glenbrook South 8: Elise Kowalski (2-1) earned the win for the Mustangs in the quarterfinal of their own tournament. Meadows will face Geneva in the semifinal at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Barrington splits: Barrington (14-4) dropped a 10-9 decision to Williamsville (14-3) in its first game of the Washington tournament and rebounded with a 1-0 win over Geneseo (13-4).

Carly Kordich (2-for-4, RBI) and Rachel Krzysko (2-for-3, double) were also multiple hitters for the Fillies, who led 9-1 before Williamsville scored 8 runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Macdonald's RBI single with one out scored Kordich for the only run in the Fillies' win over Geneseo.

Fillies shortstop Liz Sweeney went 2-for-3 in the game, belting a triple and a double.

Sophomore Catherine McMahon (11-3) earned the win.

Loyola 7, St. Viator 3: The Lions (6-6) scored all their runs in the fourth.
