Events celebrate the Week of the Young Child

All children deserve to be celebrated, and so do the many services and programs available to them.

Wheaton Park District will do just that during the Week of the Young Child Friday, April 29, to Saturday, May 7.

For nine days, families can take advantage of nearly 30 opportunities. They include a kickoff Ice Cream Social from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 29, at the Community Center gym, 1777 S. Blanchard Road, Wheaton; Sensational Senses Nature Hike from 2 to 2:45 p.m. Monday, May 2, at Lincoln Marsh Natural Area; Kindergarten Cookery from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, May 3, at the Community Center; and Don't Worry. BEE Happy at Toohey! from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, at Toohey Park, 1900 Orchard Road, Wheaton.

Budding history lovers can learn what items used to be thrown at a wedding across different cultures, play wedding bingo, and create a wooden train to take home at Weddings and Trains, a drop-in program from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at the DuPage County Historical Museum, 102 E. Wesley St., Wheaton. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Children and their parents also may meet camp coordinators and educators, learn about half- and full-day camps, and win prizes at Summer Camp Open House from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 2, at the Community Center. The kids can choose from several different themes: animal, art and history, fishing, science, nature, outdoor adventure, sports, and campers' favorites.

Kids may play free rounds of miniature golf from 3:30 p.m. to dusk Tuesday, May 3, and Thursday, May 5, at Prairie Path Mini-Golf Course, 100 N. Naperville Road, Wheaton.

Other options include ballet, tap and jazz classes; hoops, floor hockey, soccer, baseball and track sessions; pottery class; and Lil Chefs class. For the full list of programs, visit wheatonparkdistrict.com/wotyc.

The week concludes with Go Fly a Kite, the Wheaton Park District's annual kite-flying event, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at Graf Park, 1855 Manchester Road, Wheaton. Drop in any time and find out which kite can fly the highest and compete in the "Most Unique Kite" contest, plus absorb the aerials of the Chicago Fire Kite Team.

All programs are free, apart from merchandise at the Scholastic Book Fair Friday, April 29, and Monday, May 2, to Thursday, May 5, at the Wheaton Park District Community Center.

Some programs require registration. To register, visit wheatonparkdistrict.com/wotyc or stop in at the Community Center.
