District 214 students advance to National DECA Competition

More than two dozen High School District 214 students will compete at DECA's national competition later this month in Nashville after earning top marks at the state level.

At Elk Grove High School, students Bradley Carpenter, Markos Christoforou, Connor Cloherty, Daniel Dalenberg, Sean Duffy and Kashyap Patel will advance to the national competition.

Carpenter, Christoforou, Dalenberg and Duffy placed fourth in Financial Consulting, Business Service Management, Quick Serve Restaurant Management and Retail Merchandising, respectively.

Patel earned third in Business Financial Services and Cloherty took second in Restaurant and Food Service Management.

Nine John Hersey High School students qualified for the national competition, including Grace Picchiotti, Bridget Stephens, Andrew Stomper, Jason Kloud, Ethan Witz, David Fernquist, Emmy Pascual, Sophie Shepley and Julia Hapanowicz.

Overall, 35 Hersey students competed for the state tournament, 11 of whom finished in the top 10 in the state. Shepley and Hapanowicz were named state champions in Buying and Merchandising, Pascual placed second in Principles of Hospitality and Tourism, Witz and Fernquist placed fourth in Travel and Tourism, Stomper and Kloud placed fifth in Financial Analysis and Picchiotti and Stephens were national qualifiers for Hospitality Services.

Eight Prospect High School students will advance to the national competition, including Zach Hittie, Grace Kho, Jacob Lomazov, Jonathan Ampalloor, Kate Ponzi, Katie Ryan, Evan Beer and Mercedes Walter. Overall, 27 Prospect students competed at the state level.

Hittie was named state champion in Automotive Services Marketing, Kho placed third in Principles of Hospitality and Tourism, Lomazov won third place in Principles of Business Management, Ampalloor took home fourth place in Human Resources, Ponzi and Ryan, placed fourth in Marketing Communications Team.

At Rolling Meadows High School, nine students competed at the state conference, four of whom placed in the top 10.

Students Kris Papa, Andrew Tavares and Erin Fitzgerald will continue to the national competition. Papa earned third place in Marketing Management, Tavares was named state champion in the Start-Up Business Plan written event and Fitzgerald was named state champion in the Franchising Business Plan written event.
