Lake Villa school goes green for Earth Week

Olive Martin School in Lake Villa went green this week as students participated in a variety of events in advance of Earth Day on Saturday-.

"Every year, we do an Earth Week but it's been low-key, so this year we decided we wanted to put a lot more emphasis on it," second-grade teacher Cathy Mack said Thursday.

Each grade level picked an area to focus on, ranging from a used gym shoe collection by fifth-graders to planting seeds by the kindergartners.

Another project the school worked on was waste reduction at lunch.

"On Tuesday, we weighed all the garbage, and then we weighed it for our waste-free Wednesday," Mack said.

One grade level was able to cut the waste from 100 pounds to 20 pounds, Mack said.
