Police: Aurora woman physically abused 6-week-old relative

A 24-year-old Aurora woman has been charged with physically abusing a 6-week-old boy, according to police and court records.

Chantriese L. Phillips, of the 1600 block of Plum Street, was arrested Wednesday, and charged with aggravated battery and aggravated domestic battery to a child under 13 causing permanent disability, according to Aurora police and Kane County court records.

Police said Phillips and the infant are related but declined to elaborate further on their relationship, citing the baby's age and that the baby is a crime victim.

Phillips is charged with abusing the baby on April 13, records show.

A relative of both Phillips and the infant who lives in Oswego called for an ambulance that day because the boy showed signs of seizures.

Doctors examined the baby and found "numerous injuries consistent with child abuse." He has been transferred to a Chicago hospital and continues to be treated for trauma to its head, brain and body, Aurora police said.

Phillips does not have any previous criminal cases out of Kane County other than a speeding ticket, according to court records.

She is being held on $250,000 bail, meaning she must post $25,000 to be released while the case is pending.

Phillips is next due in court on May 19 and faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of the most severe charge.

The investigation is continuing and police said they have not ruled out more charges.
