Saint Anne eighth-graders host STEM Night
Saint Anne Parish School recently celebrated the first STEM night hosted by its eighth-grade students. Under the direction of teachers Lisa Torrence, Laura Burnton and Emily Salzman, the students worked to create videos and presentations focused on their sustainability challenge.
This initiative is a new and improved Science Fair experience for the eighth-graders. This allows the students to continue their work in scientific inquiry, taking it a step further and incorporating advanced practices involving math, technology and engineering with a focus also on their Catholic identity.
With the sustainability initiative, students can see how skills they practice do not end when leaving one classroom to go to another. They collaborated with their peers to think critically to meet the expectations of the next generation science and technology standards.
They designed a plan and monitored and recognized their impact on the environment as they worked together to create a solution.
Their presentations delved into the following: Pope Francis' environmental message; what sustainability means; community involvement; how to compost; recycling initiative; and the garden process.
Saint Anne Parish School, as a parish elementary school (Pre-K though 8), is an integral part of the Saint Anne Catholic Community in Barrington, rooted in Catholic values and academic excellence.
