Westminster Christian to stage 'Alice in Wonderland Jr.'

Go down the rabbit hole as Westminster Christian Middle School brings Disney's "Alice in Wonderland Jr." to life.

"Alice in Wonderland, Jr." is Disney's take on the classic story of Alice from the book "Through the Looking Glass," where a young girl dreams of following a white rabbit into another land of colorful characters and silly scenarios.

"This show will be surprisingly enjoyable to our audience," says Johanna Johnson, musical director at Westminster. "It's so fun to see this show adapted from the animated movie to the stage. The characters come to life in such a different way as they are portrayed by our students."

The lead role of Alice is played by eighth-grader Alivia Anderson.

"It feels wonderful to be playing Alice, and I'm grateful for the opportunity," she said. "Being a lead has taught me how to be dependent on others and to work as a team rather my typical independent self."

Eighth-grader Victoria Layne plays the Queen of Hearts.

"Ever since I got into acting and performing, I've always wanted to be able to contribute to a show in a leading role," Victoria said. "Being up on stage acting or singing for everyone to hear has always been a passion of mine. In the role of the Queen of Hearts, I can finally live out that desire and enchant people with the talents God has given me.

"I love how challenging this role is because the Queen of Hearts is very different than me. I am blessed to work with wonderful directors and a talented cast."

The role of Cheshire Cat is portrayed by three actors working as one character. Stephanie Fu plays one of the Cheshires.

"I really love that I get to play this role because I get to work with my friends and be sassy with them," Stephanie said.

The cast comprises 34 students ranging from fourth to eighth grade. This production will bring back nostalgic memories with songs such as "The Golden Afternoon," "How do you do and Shake Hands," and a fun re-imagining of "Zip a Dee Doo Dah."

Performances are at 7 p.m. Friday and 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, April 22-23, in the Chapel of Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2700 Highland Ave., Elgin. Tickets are $8 premium seats and $5 for general admission and can be purchased online at www.tix.com (search for "Alice in Wonderland") or at the door.
