North Aurora trash toter rental price drops more

Waste Management is slicing $1 a month off the cost of renting 96-gallon garbage toters in North Aurora in exchange for a favor from the village.

It wants to split the fall and spring one-day "amnesty" drives into two-day efforts, village administrator Steven Bosco told the village board Monday. On those days, people can dispose of bulky items such as rolls of carpeting without having to affix a $3.61 sticker. The collections are meant to encourage people to clean up their homes and yards.

The company has had difficulty collecting all the items put out for those days in just one day, Bosco said. Last year the company started a cleanup a day earlier without announcement, but that confused people, who feared they had missed the collection, he said.

The price reduction on the tote takes effect July 1.

The amnesty day scheduled May 13 will remain as is, to avoid confusion.

The price of the toter had already decreased $5 a month under the terms of a new five-year contract approved April 4.

Trustee Laura Curtis asked if the village could ask Waste Management to lower the price more, saying a lower price might encourage more households to rent toters and, in turn, reduce the garbage blowing around on trash day.

Bosco said he asked and the answer was "no."
