Winston 8th-grader wins state Mathcounts title

Kinllen P., an eighth-grader at Winston Campus Junior High, secured a spot on the 2016 Illinois National Mathcounts Team after taking first place in the state Mathcounts competition held March 19 in Lisle. He and the other top-four finishers in the state contest will now prepare to participate in the 2016 Raytheon Mathcounts National Competition, which will be held May 7-10, in Washington, D.C.

Kinllen's strong performance in the North Suburban Chapter of the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers' Mathcounts competition in February qualified him to advance to the state Mathcounts competition as an individual. At the chapter competition, he finished second overall and second in the oral countdown round for the third year in a row.

The Mathcounts teams from Walter R. Sundling Junior High and Plum Grove Junior High joined him, as their top-five finishes at the chapter competition also qualified them to compete at the state contest. At state, Plum Grove finished in sixth place, and Sundling finished in 11th place.

In individual competition, the following District 15 students scored among the top 55 students who participated in the state contest:

• Kinllen P., an eighth-grader at Winston Campus Junior High, finished first

• Sean R., an eighth-grader at Plum Grove Junior High, finished 15th

• Eileen P., an eighth-grader at Plum Grove Junior High, finished 37th

• Stella C., a seventh-grader at Plum Grove Junior High, finished 27th

• Ryan T., an eighth-grader at Walter R. Sundling Junior High, finished 46th

• Cindy C., an eighth-grader at Walter R. Sundling Junior High, finished 47th
