Reputed Aurora gang member pleads guilty to gun charge

AURORA, Ill. (AP) - A reputed member of a suburban Chicago street gang has been sentenced to about 6 1/2 years in prison for his involvement in a police shooting.

A Monday statement from the Kane County state's attorney's office says 23-year-old Rene Muro, of Aurora, agreed to the sentence for his plea of guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm by a street-gang member.

Prosecutors say Muro and co-defendant Erik J. Esparza appeared to point or threaten to point guns at undercover officers in July last year. When an officer fired in the direction of Esparza, both men fled. They were soon captured.

Jurors convicted Esparza in February of unlawful possession of a firearm by a street-gang member, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated assault. He received a nine-year prison term.
