Fireworks charity disbands, but Fox Lake trying to host show in July

Fox Lake officials are working to keep fireworks exploding over the Chain O' Lakes after the charitable group that funded the annual show folded in March.

According to the Chain O Lake's Fireworks Facebook page, the group decided to not hold a show in 2016, saying "We have gallantly tried to put on the best show funds could provide but feel our time was frivolous and we could barely cover costs." The group's website at keepthesparkalive.com has also been shut down.

Mayor Donny Schmit said the village is looking at "picking up the ball" to host a fireworks show July 2 at the village's Lakefront Park on Nippersink Drive, over Pistakee Lake.

"The feedback from residents and downtown businesses for the show has been tremendous in the past, and we felt it's important for the businesses to have that continuity," Schmit said. "Having a show for a couple of years, then canceling it, then bringing it back again doesn't work. We need that continuity every year."

Show planning is in a very preliminary stage, he said, adding the budget is unknown and the village will need to seek permits from outside agencies to have the event.

Schmit said the village spent $5,000 for fireworks when it partnered with Chain O' Lakes Fireworks in 2015.

Fox Lake Parks and Recreation Coordinator Amy Serafin said through a prepared statement, "Fox Lake is working hard to raise funds to support a 4th of July Fireworks display on July 2nd. Currently, we are exploring fundraising options and plan on announcing a wonderful partnership very soon."

Chain O' Lakes Fireworks and Keep the Spark Alive was founded in 2009 after Mineola Hotel owner Pete Jakstas Sr. retired from his well-known fireworks show over Fox Lake in 2008.

However, the charitable group was hit by a scandal in 2014 when former president Noreen Michael was charged with a felony count of theft for taking money from the organization.

Authorities said Michael used a fireworks fund debit card to take approximately $8,700 between February 2011 and December 2012. The money was spent on personal expenses, authorities said.

She pleaded not guilty to the charges and is due to go to trial May 16. If found guilty, she could be sentenced to 2 to 5 years in prison. The charge is also probationable.
