Softball: Wiesnoski creates winning outcome for Deerfield at Maine West

Deerfield softball coach Susan Johnson calls junior right-handed pitcher Hannah Wiesnoski very creative.

Johnson seems to be right on target, just like Wiesnoski was with most of her pitches on Thursday.

How's this for creativity?

Wiesnoski, wearing No. 13, hurled a 13-0 shutout at Maine West.

How about this? Wiesnoski's first warm-up pitch every inning to catcher Missy Iio was an over-hand fastball.

"Oh, that just warms up my shoulder a little more than if I were only throwing them all underhand," she explained.

And the most important part of the creativity that Johnson was referring to?

Wiesnoski is a skilled artist and she is looking for the best college in that field.

"I take a lot of art classes," said Wiesnoski, who is now 2-0 in the Central Suburban North after a win on Tuesday against Maine East. "I want to go to an art school."

She was able to school batters on Thursday with her fastball and movement pitches, striking out three and tossing a 3-hitter.

"She throws in the low 60s," said Johnson, whose team is 6-5 and 2-0. "When she's on, she's tough to hit."

Maine West's hits were by freshman Gabriella Demma (first inning), senior Nicole Byerly (third inning) and senior Monica Liwag (fourth inning), who had 2 hits against Glenbrook North on Tuesday including a double.

"She's (Wiesnoski) a good pitcher," said Maine West coach Mike McGovern. "She has been good the last few years."

The Warriors (1-6, 0-2) did hit some balls hard but right at fielders.

Byerly flew out sharply at left fielder Micki Anderson in the fifth inning and Nora McDonald had a good swing on a shot caught by right fielder Ally Mart in the third inning.

"We hit at them," McGovern said. "And they made nice plays (including a 5-3 double play in the first inning)."

The Deerfield bats, which collected 10 hits, were led by senior first baseman Carly Frisone, who missed the cycle by a triple.

The power-swinging lefty went 3-for-3 with 5 RBI and a 3-run homer in the first inning to center field which proved to be the game-winning RBI.

Frisone is hitting close to .400.

"She's just a solid hitter," Johnson said. "She's a great player and a great kid, always positive."

"Last year, I missed the cycle by a double," she said with a smile. "Maybe one day."

This day, was one that Wiesnoski will remember.

"Carly's a great hitter," she said. "And my catcher (Iio) really grounds me. She always stays positive no matter the situation."
