Prospect Heights police celebrate International Turban Day

The Prospect Heights Police Department celebrated its diversity this week by recognizing International Turban Day, or Vaisakhi in the Sikh religion.

Community Liaison Officer Pardeep Singh Deol, who has been with the city since 2013, helped the department celebrate the day with traditional Indian food and discussions about cultural awareness.

"It's important to support and celebrate all cultures of the world, especially with those who work for and with us" Police Chief Al Steffen said. "Over 40 percent of Prospect Heights residents were born speaking a language other than English but we are all one community."

The cultural holiday comes from the state of Punjab in the northern region of India and is celebrated all over the world as a form of New Year and marking of the spring harvest.
