ABC 7's Magers to sign off May 25

ABC 7 anchor and reporter Ron Magers is set to retire next month after more than three decades as a broadcast journalist, the TV station reports.

Magers, who anchors the station's 5 p.m. newscast with Cheryl Burton and 10 p.m. newscast with Kathy Brock, will work his last day May 25.

Alan Krashesky will take over both of Magers' spots and continue his additional anchor duties at 6 p.m. with Kathy Brock. "For decades Ron Magers has been the trusted voice of authority for Chicago news viewers. His intellect, ability to put complicated stories into context and effortless broadcast style have put him in a league of his own. We thank him for always trying to make us better and wish him nothing but the best," said Jennifer Graves, ABC 7 vice president of news and news director.

Magers joined ABC 7 in 1998 as the station's 5 p.m. anchor and was named the 10 p.m. news anchor in 2002.

He's earned numerous awards, including seven Chicago Emmy Awards, a Peter Lisagor Award and a National Press Club citation, as well as awards from The Associated Press and the Illinois Broadcasters Association and an Ethics Award from the Society of Professional Journalists.
