Baseball: Glenbard South beats ICCP

The start of Tuesday's baseball game between Glenbard South and IC Catholic Prep looked a little like Monday's.

Even with another first-inning lead, that wasn't exactly good news for the Raiders.

But unlike the opener of the Metro Suburban West series, Glenbard South made Tuesday's lead hold up. In fact the Raiders built on it.

Scoring in each of the first four innings, Glenbard South managed a series split with a 7-2 victory over the Knights in Glen Ellyn.

"We're getting better as the season goes along, so hopefully we keep it up," said Raiders pitcher Kyle Zygadto. "Last week was tough not playing much with the weather, but maybe we can start getting some wins."

Zygadto was a big reason for Tuesday's reversal of Monday's 6-3 loss to the Knights. He struck out 10, allowed only 1 hit and overcame 5 walks in a five-inning effort. IC Catholic Prep (11-6, 4-3) - playing its first road game and its first game on grass - didn't put a ball in play until the fourth inning.

By that time Glenbard South (4-5, 2-2) had built a 6-0 lead. Even though the Knights scored a pair of unearned runs, including one on C.J. West's fourth-inning RBI single, they couldn't muster the offense of Monday when they rallied with a 5-run sixth.

"They capitalized early big time," said IC Catholic Prep coach Zach Rodeghero. "To our guys' credit, we fought back the same way we did yesterday. We just couldn't capitalize today like we did yesterday."

Sean Cooke's 2-run triple, followed by Dan Opem's RBI single, gave the Raiders a 3-0 first-inning lead. After adding 2 runs in the second inning, the Raiders extended the lead on an Opem sacrifice fly and Christian Dupuis' RBI single.

Zygadto left after five innings. Joey Gedwill closed it out with two scoreless innings, retiring six of the seven batters he faced.

"We kept tacking on today, and that was big for us," said Raiders coach Mike Riley. "When you've lost two straight games, you're never comfortable until that last out."
