Fire damages downtown Palatine hair salon

A fire that damaged a hair salon in downtown Palatine late Sunday night is being blamed on combustible materials left in a clothes dryer, fire officials said Monday.

Firefighters were called to a seven-unit strip mall at Palatine Road and Brockway Street about 10:16 p.m. on reports of smoke coming from a building at that address, according to the Palatine Fire Department. The first firefighters to arrive found smoke coming from the storefront of Chris and Dora's Hair Salon, 56 W. Palatine Road, officials said.

Firefighters entered the business to search for anyone who might be inside and extinguish the blaze. The fire was declared under control at 10:32 p.m., officials said.

The salon was closed at the time of the fire and no one was found inside. No firefighters were injured, officials said.

Damage estimates were not immediately available, but the salon will be closed indefinitely until building repairs are complete, according to the fire department.

The fire was fought by 29 firefighters, staffing four engines, three ladder trucks, one rescue squad and three ambulances which responded to the scene along with five command officers and three investigators. Mutual Aid was received from the Arlington Heights and Rolling Meadows fire departments, and Palatine police officers assisted at the scene with traffic and crowd control, which included shutting down Palatine Road between Plum Grove Road and Greeley Street as firefighters had hoses stretched across the road.
