140 volunteers from Geneva church perform Day of Community Service

One church. One day. Seven community service projects. More than 140 volunteers.

Members and friends of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva turned out in force on April 2 for the church's annual Day of Service event, providing substantial assistance and support to community service agencies across the Fox Valley.

In a single day, UUSG members and friends sorted and bagged more than seven tons of potatoes for area pantries at the Northern Illinois Food Bank; prepared dinner for residents of the Lazarus House homeless shelter; helped with cleanup and other tasks at the Mutual Ground women's shelter; stocked shelves and processed donations at Habitat for Humanity ReStore; purchased, bagged and delivered personal care items for seniors in need for the Humanitarian Service Project; played bingo and socialized with residents of Bria of Geneva; and purchased, assembled and delivered "birthday parties in a bag" for disadvantaged children.

While the church is involved in community service activities all year long, the Day of Service event provides an opportunity to focus volunteers' energy on critical projects and maximize the church's positive impact on area agencies and the people they serve.

"In our community there are many people in need. Seniors who can't afford basic necessities. Homeless people. Hungry families. Women who have suffered abuse," said Jean Pierce, church member and Social Justice Team chair. "On our Day of Service, our church is able to demonstrate that if we all work together we can make a big difference in the lives of our less fortunate neighbors."
