Naperville youths search for amphibians

Naperville-area kids got a chance to meet some of their seldom-seen neighbors Saturday.

No, it wasn't that boy down the block who's addicted to video games and never steps into the sunshine.

These neighbors are far more mysterious; they're some of the amphibians who share our suburban landscape but rarely come face to face with us.

You know: creatures such as frogs, toads and salamanders.

In a program called Amazing Amphibians, kids ages 9 to 12 got to check out some of the creatures inside Naperville Park District's Knoch Knolls Nature Center River Room and then go outside to search for them around the pond, creek and under logs.

The idea was to learn about the amphibians double lives living both on land and in the water and to get a greater appreciation for nature.
