School officials say 250 union members worked during strike

CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago Public Schools officials say 247 members of the Chicago Teachers Union reported for work on April 1, the day teachers walked out classrooms to highlight funding woes.

Schools spokeswoman Emily Bittner says most of the union members reporting for work were teachers. However, she said Friday she had no details on where those workers reported.

CTU Vice President Jesse Sharkey pointed out that the union comprises 27,000 members. He said "the vast, vast majority of them participated in the strike."

Sharkey also questioned how CPS determined that 247 people crossed picket lines. He said it was possible those people getting paid were already on an approved leave.

The walkout closed schools for nearly 400,000 students. District officials said none of the striking teachers would be disciplined, just unpaid.
