Lawyers for former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert, who admitted violating banking laws in an agreement to pay $3.5 million in hush money, say their client “feels deep regret and remorse for his actions” and is “prepared to accept the consequences.” In a sentencing memorandum filed in federal court Wednesday, defense attorneys Thomas Green and John Gallo asked U.S. District Judge Thomas M. Durkin to sentence the 74-year-old former lawmaker to probation. Hastert “apologizes for his misconduct that occurred decades ago,” the court filing said. Full story.

Tollway: Bridge disaster won't hinder I-90 completion this year

Construction delays to one segment of the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) after a fatal beam collapse in Des Plaines should not get in the way of finishing the massive rebuilding and widening of the tollway this year, a tollway spokesman said. Vicente Santoyo, a 47-year-old father of four, died and three fellow workers were injured in the accident early Tuesday at an I-90 bridge over Touhy Avenue. Full story.

Lawsuit filed in fatal limo crash on I-90

Two limousine passengers hurt in a fatal crash last month on I-90 near Elgin filed a lawsuit in Cook County circuit court claiming negligence by the limo company and the driver caused their injuries. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Michael Johnson and Robert Rosa of Fitchburg, Wisconsin, who were among seven passengers injured in the deadly crash that occurred about 7 a.m. March 25 near Route 25. Drug charges against former deputy thrown out

A Kane County judge Wednesday ruled illegal a search of a retired Oregon sheriff's deputy's truck that led to seizures of cocaine, heroin, meth and marijuana from storage lockers in Chicago and Milwaukee. That evidence, therefore, cannot be used in the trial of William Floyd Marsh Jr. of Creswell, Oregon. Full story.

Sheriff says jailing poor, mentally ill is unjust

The numbers of mentally ill people housed in the nation's prisons and jails are staggering, Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said last night at a presentation at Elgin Community College, and many of them shouldn't be there. Dart has led a campaign to reduce what he calls the unjust incarceration of the poor and mentally ill. Full story.
