A rite of spring: 'Dance of the Woodcock' at The Hollows in Cary

The McHenry County Conservation District invites you to witness the "Dance of the Woodcock," an annual rite of spring, in two programs at The Hollows Conservation Area, 3804 Route 14, Cary.

Adults and children, age 8 or older, can sign up for the program from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 12. There also will be a program for those age 14 or older from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 13.

The woodcock is normally a very shy and elusive bird. In the spring however, the male performs a courtship display that is a joy to behold. The performance, which you will most likely hear more than see, includes acrobatic flight, beautiful song and a floorshow. Dress for the weather and don't be late, as he is very particular about the time and place of his performance!

Registration is required by Friday, April 8.

This program is free to McHenry County residents or $5 for nonresidents.

Registration is accepted online at www.MCCDistrict.org, by phone at (815) 479-5779, by mail-in and drop-off at Prairieview Education Center, 2112 Behan Road in Crystal Lake, or drop-off only at Lost Valley Visitor Center, Route 31 and Harts Road in Ringwood.
