Baseball: South Elgin downs Hampshire in 8 innings

Down to its last out - and strike - the South Elgin baseball team pulled off a 4-3 nonconference win over Hampshire on Wednesday.

Michael Cipriani, who was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, reached base on a dropped third strike with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, stole second and then scored the game-winning run on a single from Cameron Kovanda to give the Storm (3-2) the win.

Mitch Butvilas added a 3-for-4 day with a double and an RBI for South Elgin while Bryant Diel also drove in a run.

Dylan Wells picked up the win on the mound in relief of Joe Roberson, who went 6 innings.

For Hampshire (4-4), Noah Schrader was 3-for-4 with a double and Michael Kruse drove in a run. Carter Lawler took the pitching loss.

St. Charles East 7, Fremd 4: Jim Dale had 2 hits with a triple and 2 RBI and Austin Gift drove in 2 runs to lead the Saints (3-3) to a nonconference win. Niko Klebosits added a double and Josh Soderstrom picked up the pitching win in relief.

ACC 14, Sale Creek (TN) 0: Ryan Poplawski had a double and an RBI while Michael Bieterman (2 hits) and Patrick Flanagan drove in 2 runs each to lead the Chargers (5-1) to a win at the Pounders Classic in Tennessee. Sean Sinisko struck out 10 and allowed just 1 hit in 4 innings in earning the win on the mound.

Aurora Christian 6, East Aurora 1: Dustin Barrett had 2 hits with a double and an RBI and Ethan Stoneberg allowed just 4 hits with 8 strikeouts in 4 innings as the Eagles (2-0) won in nonconference play.

Marmion 6, Joliet Catholic 3: Will Matthews had 2 hits and an RBI and Chase Stanke a double as Marmion (1-2) won for the first time this season. Brandon McPherson gave up 2 hits with 8 strikeouts in earning the win on the mound.

Woodstock North 1, Streamwood 0: Despite Adam Sojda striking out 13 and allowing just 4 hits, the Sabres (1-3) lost this nonconference game. Streamwood had just 3 hits.

Marengo 8, Elgin 2: Five more errors did in Elgin again in a nonconference defeat. Elgin also managed just 2 hits. Eddy Ramos took the pitching loss.

Plainfield North 3, Cary-Grove 0: In downstate Marion, the Trojans (3-4) had just 4 singles in absorbing the loss. Matt McCumber was the losing pitcher.

Monsignor McClancy (NY) 3, Kaneland 1: At the Mingo Bay Classic in Myrtle Beach, Matt O'Sullivan triples and Jack Weigand doubled for Kaneland (0-2). Jacob Violett took the loss, striking out 8 in 6 innings.

St. Charles North 6, Highland JV 3: Also in Myrtle Beach, Connor Bizik went 3-for-3 and Blake Saltsman added 2 hits and 2 RBI for the North Stars. Jason Shanner also had a double for SCN and Andrew Winkleman picked up the pitching win.

LaSalle (PA) 11, St. Charles North 5: In their second game of the day, the North Stars (2-1) got 2 hits including a home run and 2 RBI from Tyler Mettetal but suffered their first loss of the season. Kyle Novotney had 2 hits for SCN asnd Zach Mettetal drove in 2 runs.

CL South 4, Benton 2: In Marion, Cam Geisser (RBI) had a triple and Nick Van Witzenburg (2 hits) a double to lead Crystal Lake South (4-0). Andrew Engleking gave up 4 hits in 6 innings to earn the win.

Huntley 7, CL Central 0: In a Fox Valley Conference crossover, Jeff Heinrich (2 hits, RBI), Danny Smith (HR, 2 RBI) and Charlie Nubert (RBI) led Huntley (4-3) to the win. Adam Smylie was the winning pitcher, allowing no hits with 4 strikeouts in 5 innings.
