Wedl helps Wauconda shut out Palatine

Kayla Wedl threw a three-hit shutout and homered twice, and Wauconda's softball team beat visiting Palatine 5-0 in nonconference action Tuesday.

In just her second pitching start of the season, Wedl struck out 13 and allowed only 1 walk.

Wauconda (3-2) scored 2 runs in the first and three in the fifth. Taylor McCarthy launched a two-run home run in the fifth, and Wedl (2-for-3) followed with her third homer of the season on the next pitch.

Grayslake North 9, Vernon Hills 4: Rebecca Sosa homered, Jenna Pozezinski continued her hot hitting by going 3-for-4, and the Knights won in the nonconference game.

Grayslake North received RBI from six girls. Jessica Vaughn went the distance in the circle (3 K, 8 H, 2 BB, 2 ER) and helped herself at the plate by going 2-for-2. Pozezinski had a double and her seventh RBI of the season in raising her batting average to .667 through seven games.

"She's really dialed in at the plate right now," Knights coach Lea Corcoran said.

Sosa (2 RBI) hit her first blast of the season on a 3-2 count to right-center in the second inning. Freshman Grace Brown made her varsity debut, going 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Left fielder Katie Moats went 2-for-2 with 2 RBI. Carissa Popp was 1-for-3 with 2 RBI, and Lauren Olsen was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

"It was a team effort today," Corcoran said.

For Vernon Hills, Dana Meline was 1-for-4 with an RBI and some nice plays at shortstop, Corcoran said. Sara Lenzi was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Grayslake Central 14, Round Lake 0: Reagen Radke struck out 15 batters and allowed only 2 hits in a five-inning complete game, and Morgan Smigielski had a home run and 6 RBI for the Rams in nonconference action.

Maddie Marshall homered and drove in 3 runs for Grayslake Central (3-3). Lindsay Brust had a triple and 2 RBI, and Teagan Truskowski contributed a double, as did Smigielski.

Marian Central 6, Wauconda 2: On Monday, the host Hurricanes scored 6 runs in the first inning en route to the nonconference win.

Kayla Wedl pitched 4 scoreless, no-hit innings in relief for Wauconda (2-2), striking out nine and not walking a batter. Brooke Sefcik (1-for-3, 2 RBI) and Alex Steffens (2-for-3) both doubled for the Bulldogs.
