Thomsen, Elk Grove rally past Ridgewood

Trailing 3-2 at Ridgewood, Elk Grove was down to its last out in the top of seventh inning.

But Kylie Thomsen made sure she wasn't the last out.

Instead, the Grenadiers junior blasted a home run down the right field line to tie the nonconference softball game at 3-3.

The defending Mid-Suburban League champs then went on to score 2 runs in the top of the eighth inning to pull out a 5-3 triumph in Norridge.

The dramatic win kept the Grens undefeated at 3-0, the same record as winning pitcher Sabra Morton, who threw a 3-hitter with 6 strikeouts and 1 walk. She did not allow an earned run.

In the decisive eighth inning, Jessica Kearns' one-out RBI single scored Carly Crothers to make it 4-3. A fielder's choice groundball by Alex Masnica scored Kearns to extend the lead to 5-3.

Thomsen ended up 3-for-4 with 2 RBI while Crothers was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.

Masnica and Sarah Pauscher each had triples as the Grens outhit the Rebels 10-3.

Barrington 6, Grant 2: Sophomore right-hander Catherine McMahon improved to 6-0 with her complete game of 5 strikeouts and no walks over visiting Grant (2-3) at the Fields of Dreams.

The Fillies offense featured two extra-base hits. They were doubles by Rachel Krzysko (2-for-3 RBI) and Jenna Fingerman (1-for-3, RBI).

Other top hitters for the Fillies (6-0) were Liz Sweeney (2-for-4, 1 run), Rachel Macdonald (2-for-3, RBI) and Jamie Brown (2-for-3, RBI).

Loyola 9, Buffalo Grove 8: Visiting Loyola scored twice in the top of the seventh for the decisive runs in the nonconference game.

Senior Emily Carnes (2 RBI) and freshman Jacqueline Bickhaus had 2 hits apiece for the host Bison (2-2) while juniors Katie Fontanetta (3 RBI) and Jasmine Avalos each doubled. Sophomore Olivia Morini collected 2 RBI.

Wauconda 5, Palatine 0: Kayla Wedl threw a 3-hit shutout and homered twice. In just her second pitching start of the season, Wedl struck out 15 and allowed only 1 walk.

Host Wauconda (3-2) scored 2 runs in the first and three in the fifth.

Taylor McCarthy launched a two-run home run in the fifth, and Wedl (2-for-3) followed with her third homer of the season on the next pitch.

Freshman Grace Huff, freshman Emily Parrott (double) and senior Victoria Parrott had the hits for Palatine, which was playing its first game of the season.

Pirates sophomore pitcher Sarah Grossman struck out two.
