Hundreds of officers attend funeral for slain Indiana deputy

KOKOMO, Ind. (AP) - More than 1,000 people have gathered for the funeral of a central Indiana sheriff's deputy who was fatally shot in the line of duty.

The funeral for Howard County Deputy Carl Koontz is being held Tuesday in the gymnasium of Northwestern High School, where he was assigned part-time as a resource officer. Hundreds of police officers are expected to travel in a procession to the cemetery following the funeral.

The 27-year-old Koontz was married with an 8-month-old son.

Police say Koontz was wounded during a gunfight March 20 inside a mobile home in Russiaville (ROO'-shuh-vil) and that the shooter later killed himself.

Hundreds of police officers and members of the public filed into the gymnasium Monday for Koontz's visitation.
