District 57 should abandon all-day kindergarten idea

Mount Prospect Elementary District 57 has found a way to waste more of our tax dollars. That was done by purchasing two adjacent residences and remodeling Westbrook School and its parking lot.

Now District 57 wants to offer full-day kindergarten at Westbrook. That will most certainly require expansion of Westbrook as well as hiring additional staff. None of this will come cheap of course.

The administration seems to have that problem covered by asking the voters to approve a referendum in 2017. District 57 has a limited commercial and industrial property tax base. Therefore, the residential taxpayer must shoulder the burden once again.

Many of us on fixed incomes cannot afford these excessive yearly increases any more. Too many seniors and others have already been forced out of their lifelong homes because of their inability to pay these taxes.

District 57 receives over 31 percent of the total yearly property tax bill. Their spending practices are no longer affordable. More excessive taxation must cease and cuts need to be made now.

Offering full-day kindergarten at Westbrook and a probable building expansion are out of the question. This community cannot afford any added burden. Taxpayers will eventually revolt and any future tax referendum will be vehemently opposed and defeated.
