CLC has winning season under Ramsey

With the help of many former area high school graduates, the College of Lake County men's basketball recently wrapped up a winning season under coach Chuck Ramsey.

The Lancers finished 17-13 and 9-5 in the conference, one game behind conference co-champs Elgin and Moraine Valley.

Lancers point guard Jordan Taylor (Grayslake Central) and wing Jovan Jokic (Warren) were named first-team all-region and first-team all-conference.

Taylor, the Lancers' playmaker, was the leading scorer at 18.2 points per game.

He also averaged 4.0 assists while shooting 82 percent at the free throw line and 40 percent from 3-point range.

Jokic led the team with 72 3-pointers while averaging 12.9 points.

D.J. Ostrander (home schooled) and Arthell Rosquist (Warren) were named second-team all-conference.

Kealin McLean (Zion-Benton) was the leading rebounder at 9.4 per game while Jake Parmley (Mundelein), Jay Pettis (Warren), Alexio Ramirez (Zion-Benton) and Malcolm Reed (Grayslake Central) were strong contributors as well.

Ramsey said Parmley was "the sixth man and greatly improved."

Men's hockey

The Lake Zurich-Mundelein-Wauconda varsity finished the season at 20-16-7 after falling 6-5 to Mt. Carmel in a state quarterfinal at the Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville.

The two teams had not met before, and on paper the game looked as if it would be a good match.

That proved to be the case in a game that saw lead changes and scoring chances throughout.

Mt. Carmel scored first at 13:09 of the first period, but it did not take long for LZMW to answer on a goal from Sergei Vorobiov, assisted by Remi Mueller.

LZMW went ahead at 6:38 on a goal from the point by Tommy Sher, assisted again by Mueller.

Early in the second period, LZMW took a 3-1 lead on a power-play goal from Mueller, assisted by Brett Parola.

However, the Caravan surged back with three second- period goals, two coming on power plays, to take a 4-3 lead heading into the third period.

At 7:42 of the third period, Mueller and Parola combined again for the equalizer tying the score at 4-4.

Just a few minutes later, Mt. Carmel went ahead again, 5-4, on a goal from Cary Anderson.

Less than a minute later, Anderson struck again netting a power-play goal to extend the lead to 6-4. LZMW pulled goalie Jake Breitenreiter for the extra attacker and it paid off with a goal from Zach Zentz to draw LZMW to within 6-5.

LZMW kept the pressure in the final two minutes, putting many shots on net.

But Mt. Carmel goalie, Tyler Stanish, would not let anything past him. He made save after save until the buzzer sounded to end the game.

Xavier University sophomore Bobby Snader (Libertyville) was a part of the Musketeers' run to the Big East championship.

Men's hockey

Augsburg senior Mack Ohnsted (Stevenson) scored 2:53 into the third overtime, lifting his team to a 5-4 win over Saint John's University at Ed Saugestad Rink in Minneapolis.

The Auggies clinched the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff championship and a berth in the 11-team NCAA Division III national tournament.

Women's softball

Wisconsin-Whitewater junior first baseman Amy Ricci (Warren) brought home the go-ahead run home with a sacrifice fly as the Warhawks handed Heidelberg its first loss (9-1) with a 3-1 decision.
