Antioch crews stop apartment fire from spreading

No one was injured or displaced when Antioch firefighters put out a fire early Wednesday morning at an apartment building just north of the village's downtown, authorities said.

Deputy Chief Chris Lienhardt said the Antioch Fire Department got a call at 12:56 a.m. saying someone was "banging on doors yelling for help with a bucket of water" at a 16-unit apartment building in the 700 block of Main Street.

Firefighters arrived to find a small exterior fire in a second-story apartment, which they extinguished before it could spread to the attic or any other units. Lienhardt said the fire likely started inside a wall in the apartment, where a painter had been staying while he did some work for the landlord.

Everyone in the building was allowed to return to their homes after the fire was put out. Lienhardt said the painter lives elsewhere and was able to go home.

Crews from Lake Villa, Round Lake, Spring Grove, Bristol, Fox Lake and Newport Township fire agencies assisted with the response.
