Glen Ellyn cardiologist appointed to health board

A top cardiologist at Advocate Medical Group has been appointed to a full term on the Illinois State Board of Health.

Gov. Bruce Rauner announced the appointment of Dr. Vincent Bufalino of Glen Ellyn Friday to the board that advises the Illinois Department of Public Health.

The agency has been busy in recent years, dealing with issues including the legalization of medical marijuana and the suburban measles outbreak last year.

Bufalino was first appointed to the post in 2015. It comes with a $100 per diem that can't surpass $10,000 per year, according to the state's appointments website.

Rauner offers most of his appointments without comment, but the announcement touts Bufalino's credentials as the leader of 140 cardiologists for the Advocate system. He formerly worked as the CEO of Midwest Heart Specialists and has been an adviser to the DuPage County Board of Health.
