Still waiting for a winner in 14th Congressional District

An official winner has not yet been declared in the Democratic primary for the 14th Congressional district, as votes have yet to be tallied in 75 of the district's 465 precincts.

However, it appears that Gurnee resident Jim Walz will be the candidate to take on Republican Rep. Randy Hultgren in November.

With 84 percent of the precincts reporting Wednesday night, Walz held roughly a 3,000-vote lead over John Hosta and Jesse Maggitt. Unofficial totals show Walz with 43 percent (25,190 votes), Hosta with 38 percent (22,252 votes) and Maggitt with 19 percent (11,167 votes).

Walz declined to declare victory Wednesday afternoon, despite several news outlets projecting him as the winner.

He believes the missing precincts were out of McHenry County, where they had vote-tallying issues Tuesday night.

Walz said he had not received concession calls from the other candidates, but he complimented them on being solid candidates and helping to drive a large voter turnout.
