St. Hugh of Lincoln to host Experiential Stations of the Cross
On Good Friday, March 25, St. Hugh of Lincoln Episcopal Church, 36W957 Highland Ave. in Elgin, welcomes children and their families to learn about Holy Week by following in Jesus's steps at 4 p.m.
The Stations of the Cross allow visitors to be surrounded by the experience, and to feel what Jesus felt on his last day.
The Rev. Marion Phipps, rector of St. Hugh, began doing the kid-friendly Stations of the Cross to bring the story of Christ's Passion to life and to enrich the joys of Easter.
"The hope is that children will have a chance to experience the story of Christ's passion on a level that isn't too gruesome, but that helps them begin to understand the depth of God's love for us, in that Jesus was willing to die for us," said Rev. Phipps.
Participants can taste the bread of the last supper, and the vinegar that Jesus was given to drink. Spend time praying with him in the garden, and consider the choices Jesus and the disciples had to make before his arrest and crucifixion. Feel what it is like to hammer nails into a cross, and imagine wearing a crown of thorns.
St. Hugh parishioners Dan and Amy Dolney are the coordinators of this annual event.
"Instead of simply hearing (or not hearing) the words of the service, you will be able to get a little better understanding of what Jesus went through for our salvation," says Dan Dolney, who jumped at the opportunity to take charge of the display after experiencing the effect it had on him.
"If it touches your heart, brings a tear to your eye, or lifts up your faith just a little, we've done our job."
The experiential Stations of the Cross is located in the Children's Education wing on the church's lower level, and will be followed by a kids' Q&A session with the priest over pizza.
