Kearns, Schuster lead in McHenry County Board District 6

Newcomer James Kearns and former board member Ersel Schuster held narrow leads early Wednesday morning in the five-way race for two Republican nominations to District 6 seats on the McHenry County Board.

Systematic glitches delayed the closing of polls Tuesday in McHenry County, pushing back the counting of votes late into the night.

With just 15 of 31 precincts reporting, Kearns, 54, led with 2,849 votes, just ahead of former board member Ersel Schuster, 76, with 2,772 votes. In third place was longtime incumbent McCann, 70, with 2,760 votes, followed by Kelly Liebmann, 38, with 2,473 votes, and Preston Rea, 64, with 1,503 votes.

Rea and Kearns, supervisors in Alden and Grafton townships, respectively, and McCann, said they would focus on economic growth. Schuster, a former board member, and Liebmann, say they want to cut expenses and streamline policy.

Winners will face Democrat Allison Barnard of Marengo in November.
