Fire damages Des Plaines home; no injuries reported

It took firefighters about 20 minutes to extinguish a fire in a 2-story single-family house Monday afternoon on Des Plaines' west side, authorities said.

Crews were dispatched to the house near Oakton Street and Ridge Lane at 2:08 p.m. after receiving a report of smoke coming from the northeast corner of the house, according to Fire Chief Alan Wax.

After the primary fire was extinguished, firefighters continued to put out hot spots throughout the structure, he said.

It's possible the fire started in the roof or an upstairs closet, but investigators were still trying to determine an exact origin and cause, Wax said.

No one was home at the time of the fire, and fire department officials were still in the process of trying to contact the homeowners Monday afternoon.

No injuries were reported.

Most of the fire damage was limited to the roof and the rear portion of the house.
