'SpongeBob Musical' tickets on sale Sunday

Single tickets go on sale Sunday, March 13, for "The SpongeBob Musical," which begins its pre-Broadway tryout in Chicago June 7.

The musical is based on Nickelodeon's long-running animated series about a sponge-shaped character and his assorted aquatic pals who live in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom.

Broadway in Chicago announced on Friday that singer/songwriter Sara Bareilles, gospel singer Yolanda Adams and Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros will contribute original songs to the score which will include tunes by the late David Bowie, John Legend, Plain White T's, Cyndi Lauper, The Flaming Lips, Panic! At the Disco, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Jonathan Coulton, They Might Be Giants and T.I.

Steppenwolf Theatre's Tina Landau co-conceived and directs the show, which features a book by Kyle Jarrow. Tony Award winner Tom Kitt ("Next to Normal") will serve as music supervisor.

"The SpongeBob Musical" runs June 7 to July 3 at the Oriental Theatre, 24 W. Randolph St., Chicago.
