Mayer giving a big assist to Augustana women's lacrosse

Olivia Mayer was the assist leader for the Augustana women's basketball team this winter.

Now she is giving a big assist to the women's lacrosse team.

Mayer was named as player of the week in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin women's lacrosse.

The junior midfielder and Libertyville High School graduate helped lead the Vikings to a 14-6 win at Rhodes. She came off the bench and finished with 4 goals, 4 draw controls and 1 ground ball.

In basketball, Mayer averaged 7.6 points and had 80 assists this season. Her 270 career assists rank fourth in school history, 106 away from Kristin Romolo's (2000-04) school record.

• Vikings senior Emily Handrahan (Lake Zurich) has 7 goals and leads Augustana with 8 assists.

High school hockey

The Lake Zurich-Mundelein-Wauconda varsity won its second straight Platinum championship with a 7-0 triumph over the D155 Predators (Prairie Ridge-Crystal Lake Central) at West Meadows in Rolling Meadows.

LZMW gained a 2-0 in the first period with goals from defensemen Tommy Sher and Tyler Krasavage.

In the second period, LZMW received a pair of goal from forward Kolby Lapple. The first one came on a beautiful feed to the high slot by Remi Mueller from behind the D155 net.

Both teams changed goalies in the third period with LZMW's Jake Breitenreiter giving way to Josselin Juras to preserve the shutout.

LZMW added its final 3 goals from Brett Parola, Remi Mueller and Sher.

LZMW had 36 shots on goal to 17 by D155.

There were only two minor penalties called in the game and each team was perfect on their penalty kills.

LZMW will play a varsity 'white' quarterfinals of the state tournament on Sunday against Mt. Carmel in Bensenville.

Elmira College freshman defenseman Kristen Chivers of Antioch and Warren High School was named to the women's hockey Eastern College Athletic Conference West first team and the ECAC West all-rookie Team after a 24-point regular season that saw the Antioch native produce 7 goals and 17 assists.

She registered at least one point in 18 of 25 games played this year and posted a season-high 7-game point streak during the heart of the season. Chivers produced four multi-point performances, all four coming in ECAC victories.

Her 24 points are tied for first on this year's team, while her 17 assists are tops among Purple and Gold skaters. Chivers' numbers stacked up against the rest of the nation are just as impressive. She boasts the nation's third-highest point per game average among defenseman (0.96ppg), which also ranks sixth in rookie scoring. Chivers is the country's top scoring rookie defensemen and one of just two defensemen to rank inside the Top-30 in the nation in rookie scoring.
