'Mary Poppins' lands at Maine East High School

The beloved story of everyone's favorite nanny will be presented over two weekends in March, as the Maine East Fine Arts Department presents "Mary Poppins, the Broadway Musical."

Produced by Maine East Fine Arts Chair Edward Eubank and under the direction of theater teacher Karen Hall, the show will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 4, 5, 11 and 12, at 2601 W. Dempster St., Park Ridge.

The musical version of "Mary Poppins" combines elements from both the 1964 Disney movie starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke and the series of children's books by P.L. Travers that inspired the movie.

Because of the title character's ability to soar with the aid of her umbrella, special effects will be part of the production, with members of the crew being trained to take flight above the stage.

The Fine Arts Department is particularly excited about this production because it's based on a beloved classic and because of some unusually cool opportunities for the actors, who were trained for flight above the stage by crews from ZFX Flying Effects.

Tickets cost $10 and are available online at the Maine East website: east.maine207.org under the "Seat Yourself Online Ticketing" logo.
