Daily Herald Sunday Sports section earns Top 10 honors

The Daily Herald was recognized as a Top 10 Sunday Sports Section in a national contest judged by Associated Press Sports Editors.

Competing with newspapers with under 175,000 circulation, the Daily Herald was named a Top 10 finalist for 2015 by APSE judges in St. Petersburg, Florida, on Monday, along with the Buffalo News, Charlotte Observer, The Courier-Journal (Louisville, Ky.), Omaha World-Herald, St. Louis Post-Disptach, Seattle Times, Tampa Tribune and Tulsa World. Receiving honorable mentions were The Advocate (Baton Rouge, La.), the Des Moines Register, Indianapolis Star, The Oklahoman and The Record (Woodland Park, N.J.)

"We're very honored to be recognized for the hard work by our staff," said Tom Quinlan, assistant managing editor/sports. "We have a talented and veteran group of writers, photographers and editors who care about sports from the preps to the pros, and it's great to see that others also appreciate their work."

Although judging for the 2015 competition won't be completed until Wednesday, three other newspapers in Illinois also were recognized by APSE. The Chicago Tribune earned Top 10 Daily Sports and Special Sections for newspapers over 175,000 circulation. The Northwest Herald earned Top 10 Daily and honorable mention Sunday honors for papers under 30,000 circulation, and the News-Gazette in Champaign earned Top 10 Sunday Sports honors for newspapers under 75,000 circulation.
